+
Saint Richard of Chichester

+

+
Feast date: Fourth of April

+
Canonised: 25 January 1262 by Pope Urban IV

+
Patronage: England, Sussex, Chichester, Coachmen, Diocese of Chichester

+
Overview

+
Richard of Chichester was born Richard de Wych in the year 1197 within the town of Wych (Droitwich) in Worcestershire, England (Britannica, Catholic online, 2026). He was made Bishop of Chichester in the year 1244 and was installed by Pope Innocent IV on March 5 1245 much to the disappointment of Henry III of England who favoured another candidate named Robert Passelewe who was the Bishop elect.

+
Saint Richard was educated both in Oxford and Paris; he was a well-versed theologian who encouraged education for the lower classes, for example Saint Richard approved "a scheme for the payment and education of the cathedral choirboys" (Jones, 1993, p. 16) and also encouraged education and moral conditions among the lower clergy (Jones, 1993, p. 16) in a time before the protestant reformation where a good portion of Roman Catholic clergy did not receive a proper theological education, this was mended in the council of Trent in Chapter XVIII where each doses needs to have its own seminaries(Catholic Church, 1563, p. 189), this was instated around four hundred years after Richard's death.

+
Canonisation

+
Saint Richard was canonised on the 25th of January in the year 1262 AD. This was nine years after his death in 1253. This canonisation was unusually fast, seeing as most saints were dead decades or centuries before they were canonised; for example, Saint Thomas Aquinas was canonised in 1323 by Pope John XXII forty-nine years after his death. The reason why in my opinion his canonisation was so fast was because when he died and was buried in Chichester Cathedral and this caused many pilgrims visited the cathedral since he was a holy and humble man. There are also numerous medicals attributed to him, over the centuries. All of these factors may have resulted in his canonisation process to have speeded up.

+
St Richard's prayers

+
"Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ

+
For all the benefits Thou hast given me,
+For all the pains and insults Thou hast borne for me.
+O most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother,
+May I know Thee more clearly,
+Love Thee more dearly,
+Follow Thee more nearly." (Jones, 1993, p. 261)
